BJT score and levels

There is no pass or fail in the BJT. You get a number from 0 to 800 and the level it falls in. Understanding the scale helps you set the right goal.

Levels by score

LevelScoreIn short
J1+600–800Fully able to communicate at work in any situation
J1530–599Appropriate communication in most business situations
J2420–529Appropriate communication in a limited range of situations
J3320–419Some communication in a limited range of situations
J4200–319Minimal communication in limited situations
J50–199Little ability to communicate at work in Japanese

Why it is not a simple count

The BJT uses item response theory (IRT, 項目反応理論). Each question has its own difficulty; getting a hard question right shows more ability than an easy one. Two people with the same number of correct answers can get different scores, and scores from different sittings sit on the same scale.

Scores in ViBJT

ViBJT estimates your score with the same kind of IRT approach, but the difficulty of each question is set by ViMai, not taken from the real test. Use it to track your progress.
